Stacking the virtual shelves with cozies this past week.
Grabbed three new cozy mysteries this week - the first 2 listed from among over 60 freebies via an August Bookfunnel Promo. Check it out - "Free Cozy Mystery Books."
- Bed & Breakfast & Burglary by Sally Bayless
- And Then There Were Bones by Adriana Licio
- Arson and Americanos by Justine Maxwell
I could have downloaded a dozen more that interested me, but then I'd also be signing up for the author's newsletters. Which isn't a bad thing...I'm just on a lot of newsletter lists right now! Are you?
What's your approach when getting free ebooks and getting on an author's mailing list - do you feel you should keep getting their newsletter for awhile or do you quit right away?
I usually give the newsletter about a month and if it stays interesting, I keep it. Otherwise, I unsubscribe without comment. I just hate it when people unsubscribe from my newsletter! lol
The third ebook I grabbed for free was Arson and Americanos and I found it by exploring Maxwell's 2nd book in the series, Murder and Macchiatos. Amazon's "Look Inside" feature revealed this line in the front matter: "To read a free novella showing how Hazel got started with her mobile coffee business, click here!" Which led to her Bookfunnel landing page. Another newsletter, but that's okay!
Looks like I've got some reading to do this next week - plus some newsletters to catch up on!Colin Dexter, the creator of Inspector Morse. In fact, this is the first Inspector Morse mystery, Last Bus to Woodstock.
The novel Morse is a slightly different character than who we got to know on PBS, and quite a lot different than Endeavor (our younger Morse, also on PBS). But maybe it's the first novel jitters. ;-)
Very much enjoying the mystery, though. It's a slow burn so not a lot of action yet. Not gruesome, the murder occured off the page. And Sargent Lewis is very likeable.
Last Bus was first published in 1975, and I like the omniscient story telling that took place back in that era. People call it head hopping today, but when done well it really helps move the story along and provides interesting insight into the characters actions and motives.
I do love a good cozy mystery so I’ll check this out! Now get writing that Christmas cozy - you only have a month 😂. Have a great week!ReplyDelete
Too funny! Yes, I was shocked when I asked my writer niece if I should get a Christmas cozy up, say by Dec 1, and she said, Oh no! October! Yikes!Delete
I have just started reading cozy mysteries last year, and I'm enjoying them. I only subscripe to a couple of author newsletters and just skim through them. I'm not really a newsletter person. I'd rather read a book than a newsletter.ReplyDelete
Totally understand. Especially if all the newsletter says is 'buy my next book.' I like to get to know the author a bit, but I want those notes to be short and sweet, lol. Thanks for dropping by.Delete
Those cozies look good! Enjoy.ReplyDelete
Thanks for dropping by!Delete
How very cool that you're semi retired and can have beach time and time to write - something you enjoy doing. That sounds like the best of all worlds. Thanks for the visit today.ReplyDelete

Thanks and yeah, it's been a year in the planning and we just moved to PR. Thanks for dropping by and happy reading!Delete
I've got some author newsletters I read, some I skim, and some I should unsubscribe from but haven't because I'm too lazy. Which is really saying something since it's fairly easy, isn't it?ReplyDelete
Pretty easy, but I always feel a little guilty, lol. When a writer asks a question in the newsletter I try to answer. Ha. Can make for a long morning going through my emails!Delete
Hi there Lyn! So glad we've stumbled on your blog now. Oh wait, you actually stumbled on us and we are just returning the favor.ReplyDelete
Yes! I'm a reviewer and the best part - I'm a cat. So your Mack the Magical cats (all cats are magical, FYI) will be perfect to feature on our blog. We're not very big though. My Mommy isn't really very good with social media....
But if you want us to try one of your books, our email is firstname.lastname@example.org
Yes, you should write that cozy mystery before Christmas.
Have a good week and many blessings to you!
Thank you, Elza! I will be in touch. I'm glad you speak English because I'm not too good at communicating in "Cat" - but Mack and Mister (both magical in two different series) do really well in all languages! :-) Appreciate the offer and will send something soon! Have a great week!Delete
I subscribe to a couple of author newsletters, but only one that I actually read. Lol. I need to unsubscribe when I receive the unwanted ones instead of just deleting them. It would save me so much time. I have never read an ARC, but I would love to one day. I think most of them are e-books, but I prefer printed books. Have a great week! :-)ReplyDelete
I totally understand about reading paperbacks v ebooks. Very different experience, but ebooks are a bit more convenient for me "on the go" (from my phone) and at night when I want to read but my wife wants the lights off! (Why she wants to sleep in the dark, I have no idea! lol) Thanks for dropping by!Delete
Love the cover of the Italian Village Mystery. Hope its a good book.ReplyDelete
Isn't that a great cover? The description says it follows the format of "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie, so it should be a fun read with a different take!Delete
I read the first book in your Ma Tutt series and enjoyed it. I'm glad to see there is a second book coming out soon. I usually do subscribe to the newsletters and I stick with them. There have been times when the newsletter comes out too often or it turns out I'm not that interested and I will unsubscribe but usually I give them a chance. Have a great week!ReplyDelete
Thank you for your kind words! I wrote Ma Tutt #1 back in 2014 and finally, finally, finished book #2 - Secret Spice! Now Ma Tutt's Christmas Cookies (book #3) will be done before Christmas, I promise. Well, I hope. I'm planning on it, lol. Here's my "daily progress" report for writing Secret Spice if you are interested. http://www.lyndonperrywriter.com/search/label/Secret%20SpiceDelete
Most of the books on my Kindle are freebies, many through newsletters. Every so often I go through my emails and cull them, but if I really like someone I will follow them through Bookbub and Amazon to keep up with their books. Thanks for stopping by fundinmental.ReplyDelete
That's a good idea. I need to follow the authors on BB and Amazon. Good way to stay up with their projects without having to read too many newsletters. I don't do well with daily emails from authors, lol.Delete
I like cozies but have gotten away from them a bit. I see a bunch of new ones coming out though that look good! There's something so relaxing about them... especially in the summer when I just want something not super dark or whatever.ReplyDelete
Good point. They kind of go with summer, don't they? Although my niece tells me I need to write a Christmas cozy soon so it can go on sale in October! Yikes. Thanks for dropping by.Delete
I love cozies, but haven't read any in a while (except for my last blog tour). I had a spell of just reading them, but then went back to Thriller and then Rom Com!ReplyDelete
Have a great week!
Emily @ Budget Tales Book Blog
I like contemporary sweet romance too. If you come back to read comments, what Rom Com titles would you recommend? I like humor and that might be a fun genre to explore. Thanks for stopping by!Delete
I love cozy mysteries that feature cats! I've just downloaded Ma Tutt's Donut Hut on Kindle.ReplyDelete
Thank you so much. That means a lot and I hope you like it! Book #2 coming soon! If you want an ARC after reading Donut Hut, let me know! Thanks for dropping by.Delete
I have only signed up for a few author newsletters. I don't sign up for a newsletter for their free books. I love too many authors to be on all the newsletters, so I really try to limit ones I am subscribed to.ReplyDelete
That's a solid plan. Thanks for stopping by.Delete
Your book looks fantastic. Who doesn't love to read about cats? And magical cats sound even more wonderful.ReplyDelete
It's nice that you are able to find all these wonderful free mysteries. I imagine that most people buy the rest if they like the first in a series.
I think that's the idea. And I'm sure it works for many people. I find that I have so many free ebooks to get through that I don't get to the second book in the series of any of them! lol Thanks for stopping by!Delete
I only signed up for a handful author newsletters and don´t do that anymore. I´ve got so many unread freebies *sigh*ReplyDelete
Me too! Dang. So little time so many books! ;) Happy reading.Delete
I only receive a few author newsletters, mainly because I feel terribly guilty about unsubscribing!ReplyDelete
Me too! Plus I have so much to read and write! Best wishes.Delete
I love Kindle freebies. 📚ReplyDelete
Me too, but so many to choose from and I can't get to them all to read and review! :(Delete
I really love a good cozy. Enjoy!ReplyDelete
