Bond has No Time to Die - Movie Review

Bond has No Time to Die…But that’s not true! (Spoilers ahead.)

Saw the movie a few weeks back. Very good. Not so much a review as a few impressions. You’re mileage may vary, of course, depending on how invested you are in the franchise.

I’m not that much of a Bond aficionado, but I do enjoy the series overall. Especially these last five Daniel Craig iterations. Casino Royale was probably my favorite. (Which, I heard, followed Ian Fleming’s debut Bond novel, Casino Royale [1953], fairly closely plot-wise.)

In short, I’m along for the ride. Not worried too deeply about it all making sense. It’s a fun adventure – excellent car chases, exotic locales, beautiful women, over-the-top bad guys. It’s all good.

But if you haven’t seen Spectre (or can’t remember the plots of any of the other films in the Craig opus), you’ll likely be confused with this final outing. These movies work as a 5-part story arc.

Here are the movies in this mini-series. I need to binge watch all of them again someday.

  • ·         Casino Royale (2006)
  • ·         Quantum of Solace (2008)
  • ·         Skyfall (2012)
  • ·         Spectre (2015)
  • ·         No Time to Die (2020)

Yes, 2020. It was supposed to be released in April, 2020 or something like that. With the year and a half delay, I was surprised I hadn’t heard about the spoiler at the end. So that was a bit of a shock. But it all made sense and was probably the logical way to wrap up the Daniel Craig era.

Evidently, Mr. Craig didn’t want to do any more Bond movies; but he agreed to do this last one if it tied up all the loose ends. And it did, for the most part. The nano stuff, though, had a lot of logical holes to it. (And with all that toxic waste, I was waiting for Godzilla to appear after they blew up the island.)

Oh, and some of the casting was off. The little girl was fine. Bond’s lover was fair. The kick-butt beauty in Cuba should have gotten more airtime. But the lady who took over the 007 designation was flat. No pizazz at all. Just totally wrong for the part.

Thought the movie’s theme song by Billie Eilish was pretty good, though. Liked Adele’s Skyfall better. Eilish's voice is just too whispy and ennui-y for me.

Overall, thumbs up. Go see it. Or wait until it streams online, then you can binge the first four first.

What’s next? Who’s next? Will they have to reboot? Will they go on with the franchise like nothing happened at the end? I don’t care, lol. Like I said, I’m not that much of a Bond nerd. I’ll be there regardless, enjoying the ride. Especially if Godzilla shows up in the next one!

  1. Thanks for the review. I originally liked the Daniel Craig reboot. Casino Royale was great, but I think the only other one I watched was Skyfall. I probably should watch the other two as well.

    1. I think they'll make better sense if watched as a 5 movie story arc. Maybe not binge watch, lol, but over a few weeks? Have fun!

Keep it clean and positive. (And sorry about the word verification, but the spmb*ts are out in full force!)
