First Line Friday - Genesis by Rick Partlow

Today's First Line Friday is from my current #amreading selection - Rick Parlow's Genesis - Holy War, Book 1

The meme is hosted by Reading is My Superpower. Go there to add your blog link; participate by visiting and commenting on other participants' posts. Another linky party is hosted by Rose City Reader. Go there too! (BTW, affiliate links used throughout.)

    • Title: Genesis - Holy War, Book 1 (382 pages)
    • Author: Rick Partlow - writer of Military SF
    • Published by Aethon Books (May 25, 2021)

From the blurb...

First contact gone wrong...

It was every starship captain’s nightmare, and for Travis Miller, it was his own personal hell.

He’d done everything by the book, but when the Tahni attacked him and his crew, there was no choice but to return fire and destroy the first alien vessel humans had ever encountered.

I'm halfway through and am thoroughly enjoying this fast-paced, well told, gripping SF military adventure. I've read a number of other books by Partlow and like his scenarios and storytelling.

First line: "I hate this part," Crews murmured, staring at the screen.

Context:  Prologue. Some people don't like books that start with prologues, but done well they set up the novel with just enough information to snag a reader's attention. And this opening does just that. Crews is the captain of a mining ship; they're in the asteroid belt doing their job. After they blow up the asteroid they're mining, a rift in space opens up and they get sucked into our closest neighboring solar system - lightyears away. They can't get back.

Another Friday meme is #Friday56 (hosted by Freda's Voice). We post a snippet from page 56 or location 56 or 56% into the book. Here's a random paragraph from page 56 in Genesis (even though I'm reading the ebook, 'Go To' options are pretty advanced now! lol).

"None of my people will back out," Gruell said. "They'll be volunteering in droves from every battalion in the Corps."

Context: Now that the rift is open, the military fleet is sending an exploration team in. Volunteers only.

So that's it. What  are you reading and what's your first line for this Friday? Thanks for stopping by!
