T13 - Bible Misquotes Edition

Thirteen of Lyn's Favorite Bible Verses

Answers and Winners Posted Here

Do you misquote the bible? Do you realize it when you do?

Here are 13 popular citations, 8 of which are truly found in the Bible.*
Can you identify the 5 misquotes and non-biblical slogans?
Extra credit if you know the references for all 13 quotes. No googling! Okay, googling allowed as I think this might be harder than it looks.

1) It is more blessed to give than to receive.
2) God helps those who help themselves.
3) You reap what you sow.
4) UPDATE: Ahem, now this is a misquote (thanks to all who caught me quoting the actual KJV): The love of [M]oney is the root of all evil.
5) All things work out for the best.
6) The worker deserves his wages.
7) With God all things are possible.
8) Iron sharpens iron.
9) The truth will set you free.
10) Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.
11) Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry.
12) If a person will not work, that person shall not eat.
13) Do unto others before they do it unto you.

* Scriptural quotations (or a close paraphrase) based on the NIV Translation. Winners and answers announced later this week. Y'all come back now, ya here?
UPDATE: Answers are now up at this post - too long to add to this one! Enjoy!

  1. Well, I need more sleep first but #4 is wrong and #5 needs more context ;).

  2. LOL #11 also needs context, and #10 is surely not in the Bible. #13 just made me laugh. Ok, now I'm done, going to bed for real.

  3. Number 10 and I believe number 3 are Ben Franklin's quotes.

Number 13 is the Golden Rule...not in the bible.

I would be a lot of them are not in the bible.

    GREAT CONTEST!

  4. #2 I know is actually from Aesop's fables.

#4: The NIV actually translates it "the root of all kinds of evil".

#5: All things work together for good, not the best.

    #10 is from Ben Franklin

#13 is a bad version of the Golden rule.

    I know #1, #3, #6, #7, #8, #9, #12 are in the Bible, but I don't read the NIV at home, so I can't be 100% sure on my answers.

  6. I'm going to change 4 and 11 around, thinking 11's not in there and 4 is.

  7. Oh my. I am just not very good at quoting Bible verses. I'll have to check back and see the answers, though.

  8. Very cool - What a good idea for TT.

  9. Adam, #11 is NIV, parable of the rich man and his barns - talking to himself. So technically, it's a quote from the bible, tricky eh? lol. Just having fun, but competitors want to win, right? lol, lgp

PS oh, and emaw, Wednesday is the new Thursday :-) Good effort Duck and Bex, keep after it. Thanks for visiting Princess and ridzuan!

  11. i think #4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12, 13 are in the bible, though with minor translation issues. i think #5 should be 'all things work for good for those who love God.' #13 should be 'as you would have them do unto you.' the first part of #9 is 'and you shall know the truth and.' people generally misquote #4 and forget 'the love' part and think that its just money that is evil. #1 and 3 seem like they are but i can't quite come up with where they are in there, i think they are just good summations of biblical themes.

    anyway, great idea!

  15. Adam's good! Especially #13! Still haven't got my "stuff" together. Don't want to run backwards on my first 13. As Dane mentioned - HEY - it IS the 13th.

  16. Noticed some weren't exact quotes, but I'm not sure about letting that slide.

    It was fun, though. Thanks!

  17. The ones that I think are right are...#'s 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8(this is in Proverbs, I believe), 9, 11. That would mean that 2, 5, 10, 12, and 13 are not in there. Right or wrong? I am tired...Good night!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I know #10 is Ben Franklin.
I'll have to say #2,5,10,11, and 13. are not right!
    Really fun quiz!
    Have a great Thursday!

  22. Well, I think #2, #10 and #13 are misquotes.
    This is a great idea!

  24. Oh gosh, I don't ever do well with bible verses. Not sure I even want to guess but what sounded "ify" to me were 2, 9, 10, 13 & 15. All were definately thought provoking. Great list!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am not good with Bible verses...I'll have to ask fiance when he gets home, he would have a better idea! what a great idea for a 13! Oh and we did visit Wall Drug :-)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Definitely no. 13 is a misquote/fake! But everything else on the list sounds like it could have come from the bible!

    ReplyDelete
  27. When will you post the answers? I'm curious to know which ones are not in the bible.

    Thanks for stopping by!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, let's see, Ben Franklin is quotes and I don't THINK he wrote a book of the bible!

I probably know more, but my little guy is demanding attention, as is the laundry!

    Thanks for visiting my TT!

    ReplyDelete
  29. #2 isn't in Bible, 5 is "things work together for the good", 10 & 13 aren't there I think, hmmm, not sure on other one!
    Good list!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm migraining and on drugs today, so I'm not going to be able to really take a good stab at this. I am seeing a couple here that look more like Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac type stuff than the Bible, though.

Also, I'm lost on the Latin you left for me. I'm too rusty and drugged up to figure it out. Can you give me a hand? :-)

    Thanks for stopping by!

  31. I know for sure 2, 5, 10, and 13 are misquotes, not sure if there was anymore. It is funny, but #11 is actually in there, I like that verse! :) My list is up!

    ReplyDelete
  32. My vote for misquotes are #'s 2, 5, 9, 10, 11.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Here goes nothing...
#2, 5, 10, 12, and 13 are either misquotes or not in the Bible. #2, 10, and 12 are not in the Bible. #5 is Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him"...and #13 is part of the Beatitudes in Matthew 7:12 (I think) "do to others what you would have them do to you..."
    #1 - Acts 20:35
#3 - various places, but the actual phrase is in Galatians 6.
    #4 - I Timothy 6:10
    #6 - I Timothy 5:18
    #7 - Matthew 19
    #8 - Proverbs 27:17
    #9 - John 8:32
    #11 - Luke 12

  34. 2, 6, 10, 11, 12 are wrong. i hope i got most of them correct.

i don't misquote the Bible. God might strike me with thunder or lightning.

    my 13's up!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think I'd fail miserably at guessing. But yay for #11! I'll drink to that.

    Thanks for visiting my TT.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Some are Ben Franklin and some are Shakespeare, but I won't guess on each one individually. I love this T13 though, and am going to check back for the answers - when will you post them??!! :)

Have a great day, mine is up too...

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like #13, Do unto others before they do it unto you. Very nice.

    ReplyDelete
  38. What a great list. I knew #10 was not in the bible, but I had to read other comments before I caught them all!

Thanks for stopping by my 13!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm pretty sure # 10, 11 and 13 are not in the Bible. I'm guessing #9, and 5 might not be.

  40. SPOILER ALERT: Bible citations below.

    My Answers:

    1. Acts 20.35 "The LORD Jesus himself said: 'it is more blessed to give than to receive.'

    2. Not in NIV, it's not.

    3. Galatians 6.7: "God Cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows."

    4. 1 Timothy 6.10: "The love of money is the root of ALL KINDS of evil." Not all evil.

    5. Don't remember seeing this one in my bible. All things work out according to the will of God, but I don't remember seeing "for the best" (though if you take the position I do, which is that the will of God is for the best, the statement itself may reflect reality, if nonspecifically.

    6. Luke 10; 1 Timothy: "The worker deserves (or is worthy of) his wages." Repeated in many other places as well.

    7. One of my favorites. Matthew 19: "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

    8. Proverbs 27.17: "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."

    9. John 8: "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

    10. Benjamin Franklin. A smart man, but not quoted in the bible.

    11. This is in the gospel of Luke, but it doesn't mean what people generally think it means. This is the parable of the rich man - who takes this attitude only to be told "This very night your life is demanded of you."

    12. Not the bible.

    13. Heh. Misquote. The real quote is: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Luke 6.31.

  41. Great list. I see that many have already answered...I'll only say that I can't stand it when people say, "The Bible says..." and they state something that ISN'T there!!! It is so important that we are careful no to misspeak, isn't it???

    My TT is up here

    ReplyDelete
  42. Great list. I know little of what is in the bible, but even I could identify a couple of misquotes in there. Happy Thursday.

    ReplyDelete
  43. OK I'm gonna try and if I don't do very good please don't turn me in ~ hee ~ o ya, I forgot I'm the BAD ICL

Here's my guess at the misquotes:
    2) God helps those who help themselves.
    5) All things work out for the best.
    10) Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.
    4) UPDATE: Ahem, now this is a misquote (thanks to all who caught me quoting the actual KJV): The love of [M]oney is the root of all evil.
    11) Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry.

That's my guess without looking at anyone else's answers. No way could I give you the chapters without looking them up but I'm filled with too much sloth and gluttony right now.

    Great fun TT!

  45. What a thought-provoking post. Excellent!

  46. I'm embarassed to admit this, but I kept reading "misquote" as "mosquito."

Yeah... I think I might need my eyes checked!

  47. 2,5,10,11 and 13 are not from the Bible or are horrible misquotes.

#12 definitely is. "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat." 2 Thessalonians 3:10

#13 is a horrible misquote of the "golden rule" which is in the Bible "And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise." Luke 6:31

    ReplyDelete
  48. #5 is a misquote from Romans 8:28. Most people, if asked what it means would say "God works everything to the best."
